Are these your teeth? Misalignment of teeth can be hereditary. However there are also other reasons for crooked teeth, including thumb-sucking or pacifier sucking past a certain age, or mouth breathing.
Braces and Invisalign are appliances which are used to gently correct the arrangement of your teeth.
Braces and Invisalign are both types of orthodontic treatments that help to align your teeth to improve the appearance of your teeth and how they function.
Braces are appliances that are used to gently correct the arrangement of your teeth. The most common type would be metal braces. Invisalign gradually moves your teeth using a series of custom-made removable, comfortable and virtually invisible aligners.
It is important to maintain good oral hygiene while you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day and use interdental brushes once a day.
After your orthodontic treatment is complete, you would have to wear retainers, these may be fixed or removable. It is very important for you to remember to wear your retainers as they help to hold your teeth in their corrected positions after treatment. Without retainers, your teeth may relapse out of their newly aligned positions and revert to their original positions. If relapse occurs, it usually requires braces to correct the alignment of your teeth again.
You are recommended to wear your retainers on a full-time basis for the first three to six months. Subsequently, the retainers may be worn only at night time. This can be reduced over time and your dentist will prescribe the retention plan best for you.
TIPS: Care for your retainers
• You must remove the removable retainers when you brush your teeth.
• A toothbrush and toothpaste should be used to thoroughly clean the retainers, followed by rinsing with cool tap water. This is usually done every morning and night time when you brush your teeth.
• Never use hot water because it will cause the plastic to distort.
• In addition, there is no need to soak the retainers in any denture solutions.
• Remember to remove the retainers when eating or drinking.
• Store them in their container when not in use.
