In economics, consumer goods are things that people buy for their own use. Most people use these things every day. They range from food and clothes to tools and furniture. A lot of people also think of services like haircuts and car repairs as consumer things because they are often bought.
There are three main kinds of consumer goods: those that last a long time, those that don't last long, and services. Items that can be used for a long time, like tools or furniture, are called durable goods. Goods that are not sturdy, like food or clothes, are used up quickly and last less time. Services are things that can't be seen or touched, like getting your haircut or your car fixed.
People often use the terms "consumer goods" and "final goods" the same way. Final goods are things that people buy for their own use and that are not used to make other goods. In other words, finished goods are not traded or used as raw materials in the making of other goods.
There are four types of consumer goods: comfort goods, shopping goods, specialty goods, and goods that people don't want. Let's take a quick look at each of these things people buy.
Convenience Products
Convenience products are things that people buy often and don't have to think too hard or spend too much time deciding if they want to buy or not. There are three types of convenience items: convenience things, staples, and impulse items.
Convenience goods are market items that people often buy without doing a lot of research or comparison shopping. Like toothpaste, soap, shampoo, smokes, and so on. Convenience services are another name for these goods.
Staples are goods that people buy often, but not as often as comfort goods. For example, sugar, tea, wheat, cooking oil, etc are all staples.
Consumer goods like chocolate, ice cream, soft drinks, etc. are examples of impulse things that people buy without planning ahead.
What makes convenience products what they are
Convenience goods are things that people buy often and without doing a lot of comparison shopping or looking around. Here are some of the most important things about comfort products:
Convenience goods are ones that are usually cheap and don't take a lot of time or effort to decide whether or not to buy.
Convenience products are usually offered at all retail outlets. People can buy them whenever they want or need to.
Most of the time, convenience goods don't need a lot of advertising or marketing. People already know about them and know where to look for them.
Most goods that are easy to use have a short shelf life. They are quickly used up by the people who buy them, like smokes, chocolate, etc.
