Did you know the ketogenic diet as a medical therapy for epilepsy has been around for 101 years?! At Metabolic Health Summit 2022, Dr. Kossoff talks about the last century of the ketogenic diet in both pediatric and adult epileptic patients. He stresses the importance of having a team that works together to help patients using metabolic therapies.
Recounting why the ketogenic diet was such a success in the early 1900’s but then fell out of favor in the 1940’s, Dr. Kossoff brings to light that the scientists spearheading its use didn’t collaborate and didn’t raise up the next generation of scientists to carry the ketogenic diet forward.
Dr. Kossoff sees a future where ketone metabolic therapies can be offered as a first-line approach to some patients, avoiding drug-induced side effects that can be common. He poses the question of “Who are you helping to get the next 100 years off on the right path?”
His 3 key points to furthering our field include:
1. Be flexible and think creatively
2. Collaborate!
3. Mentor others
