Behind Naples' glossy facade of aristocratic heritage and cosmopolitan culture lies a city plagued by criminality and a dwindling economy. Heavily reliant on tourism, the locals are feeling the strain.
Mayor Luigi de Magistris is convinced that Naples "is one of the most beautiful cities in the world", yet his authority barely stretches the length of the city. Instead the Neapolitan mafia, the Camorra, is running the numerous ghettos as a state within a state. In many areas, 'protection money, not taxes' is the motto. In a downward spiral, many fear that it will deter much-needed visitors. "Naples survives largely on tourism". Now the locals are pulling together and doing everything they can to preserve their fragile economy; from rubbish collectors, to artists, to politicians and the aristocracy. "Naples will show its beauty to the world again. We are working on it".
