A well-lubricated bicycle chain is essential for optimal drivetrain efficiency. Periodically cleaning your chain and re-applying a bicycle-specific lubricant will optimize performance and help protect your expensive components.
If you lubricate the chain correctly, you should expect a quieter chain, smoother shifting and easier pedaling.
Lubing your chain takes less than a minute. Here’s how we recommend doing it:
Step 1
Bicycle lubricants work best when applied to a clean chain. Make sure your chain is clear of any grit, grime, and old lubricant by decontaminating your drivetrain with a bicycle-specific degreaser. We recommend Finish Line Speed Degreaser as it’s tough on grease and grime and dries residue free after application.
Step 2
Once your chain is clean, it’s time to lubricate. The conditions you’ll be riding in will dictate the lubricant you choose, but for this demonstration, we’ll be using Finish Line’s Wet Lube, our most durable and water-resistant lubricant.
Wet Lube is a full synthetic formula that’s perfect for long-distance riding and extreme weather conditions.
Before applying, it’s always a good rule of thumb to shake your bottle of lube. Many lubricants feature performance additives that work best when blended evenly.
Next, begin backpedaling and apply the lubricant to each chain link. For best results, we recommend applying from above the rear cassette or underneath your chain stay.
Step 3
Once you’ve applied the lube to each link, continue back pedaling for a few revolutions to ensure the lubricant has worked its way into the rollers, pins, and gears.
Step 4
Finally, use a clean cloth to remove any excess lubricant. This step is important to ensure your chain doesn’t become a magnet for attracting dirt and grime.
