Possible Alternatives for Schizophrenia Treatment
It has been almost 20 years since the most recent antipsychotic was approved for use in schizophrenia. However there could be more just around the corner.
Imagine having a conversation with a friend, or listening to your favourite nature documentary, with another person directly beside you talking about wildly inappropriate, often obscure ideas. This is daily life for people with unmedicated schizophrenia.
Currently there are limited treatment options for those with schizophrenia, to dampen these perceptions. Antipsychotics allow them to resume life with increased focus back onto their friend or beloved documentary. But one-third of people with schizophrenia will not properly react to antipsychotics. There is no current answer about how to help them.
It’s time for alternative treatment options for schizophrenia. People with schizophrenia often take multiple medications to reduce negative side effects, like cardiovascular disease. These medications may actually play a role in treatment of schizophrenia. My research will be a paving stone to see whether we could exploit the effects of these medications, to provide a wider and more inclusive range of medications to treat schizophrenia. This would allow those left behind under current treatment options to get back to listening uninterrupted to David Attenborough.
