Dispatch from Washington: Are Pak-US ties improving? When is COAS Gen. Bajwa heading to the US? Dawn’s Anwer Iqbal talks about diplomatic conversations turning into political campaigns and PTI hiring a lobbying firm.
Anwer Iqbal says there has been some improvement in Pak-US ties since the department of the PTI government led by Imran Khan in April. He added that the PTI did irreparable damage to its own and Islamabad’s relations with Washington in an attempt to gain political advantage at home as “diplomatic conversation never turn into political campaigns”.
The senior journalist reflects that Donald Lu is a low-ranking US State Department official who does not influence decision-making, expressing surprise at the PTI’s strong campaign against him. Iqbal says Imran Khan appeared to be ready to break up with the US post his February visit to Russia.
Iqbal also talks about the Pakistan Army wanting good ties with Russia but not at the cost of souring relations with the US.
