Corneal Transplant: When Is It Necessary?

A cornea transplant is a surgical procedure during which a trained surgeon replaces a segment of the patient's cornea with a new donor segment.
Eye surgeons perform the procedure on approximately 40,000 patients in the United States annually. The surgery is also called a corneal transplant and keratoplasty.
The telltale sign that a patient requires a cornea implant is that scarring or disease has rendered the cornea incapable of allowing light into the eye properly.
