Dr. Laurie: So birds are great pets. But because they fly there are certain things that we have to do at home to take precautions to make sure that they're safe. We must make sure that all windows and doors are closed. That we cover mirrors, because birds don't really realize there's a mirror there and they might fly right into it.

We certainly want to make sure that all boiling pans of water are away from your bird. They may land on the pot and burn themselves. You want to make sure that ceiling fans are off, because birds will fly into those and become injured. Anything that you can do to make sure that the bird is not flying around the house and getting into trouble. Sometimes we can prevent this by doing what, Sarah?

Sarah: Well, wing trimming is a very safe proactive way to keep your bird safe. We do a very minimal wing trim, so that what we want is for them to actually float down to the ground rather than to crash. We just don't want them to gain height. Along with making sure that your house is safe, this way you actually know that your bird isn't in danger of taking flight out a window into a fan or anything along those lines.

Dr. Laurie: So we really want to make sure that mechanically they're safe, so they're not flying into anything. We also want to make sure that we're not spraying anything or cooking anything, using Teflon pans around our birds, spraying aerosols, even burning candles that have smoke or lead in the wicks.

These are all safe things that we can do to prevent our birds from becoming injured. We want to remember that wing trimming is for the bird to be safe. It's not cruel and actually prevents injury in many, many circumstances.
