We were driving to a nature preserve in Wisconsin and saw a dairy farm with veal crates close to the road. My sister and I decided to get out of the car to see the calves. On dairy farms, calves are separated from their mothers within days of their birth so they won't drink the milk that humans want to use for themselves. Veal is a direct byproduct of the dairy industry. Anyway, once we were by the crates, the baby cows came right over. There were dozens of crates and I saw little babies peeking out at us from every one. As we put our hands in to pet them, they started sucking on our fingers! We came to the tragic realization that they were trying to "nurse" and get the warmth and security that they weren't getting from their missing mothers.
Keep in mind this quote "Every time you drink milk, it's because a calf chained in a box somewhere isn't"
