The Sunday of the Samaritan Woman is the fifth Sunday of Holy Pascha in the Orthodox Church. It commemorates the encounter of Christ with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, where He revealed Himself as the Messiah and the giver of living water. The Samaritan woman, whose name was Photine,
which means “enlightened one”. She was baptized by the Apostles and became a great martyr and an equal-to-the-apostles. The Sunday of the Samaritan Woman celebrates Christ’s universal offer of salvation to all people, regardless of their race, gender, or social status.
