(11 Apr 2016) Residents of the historic Pasar Ikan area on Jakarta's harbour-front clashed with police on Monday as diggers and other heavy machinery demolished their homes.
A group of more than a dozen women, some with children, wept and sang as they staged a sit-in before being dragged away by police.
Some residents threw rocks and there were chaotic scenes as riot police advanced into the narrow lanes of the community of about 800 homes and shops.
The eviction and demolition of the area is part of Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama's plan to turn the city's waterfront into a magnet for tourism.
The wider area is home to a historic mosque and buildings from the Dutch colonial area.
Some of the evicted residents have been promised new apartments by the city but many said they did not know where they would live after being forced to leave.
