Starting the 1953 Chevy 3100 truck restoration here on the farm is a bucket-list project Craftsman has made possible.
I’ve always wanted to live on a farm and drive an old farm truck, and since the first part is already a reality, it’s time to tackle the second! My grandfather and I had always talked about restoring an old farm truck together, so doing this restoration in his memory makes it extra special.
The purpose of the project in this video was to get it running well enough to move it to a more ideal spot to work on it. We switched out the battery, replaced the cables, and installed a terminal switch. As it turns out, the incline of the area where it’s parked doesn’t allow fuel to get to the engine, so even though we did get the truck to turn over, it wouldn’t actually start. We also came to find that the ignition is shot, and it also needs to be re-wired, so we will have to tow it to flat ground with my tractor and begin the next piece of the puzzle.
So while this was technically another “failure,” I don’t look at it that way. Working on old tools and old vehicles is a long rabbit trail. Each fix will lead you to another opportunity to fix or replace something else until you’ve had your wrench on every single piece of the vehicle. And that kind of ownership in a vehicle is pretty rare these days.

My goal is to learn and share those techniques and skills that are in danger of becoming antiquated traditions. Whether it's carving spoons, making my own hand tools, or growing heirloom tomatoes, the farm and workshop definitely keep me busy and support on Patreon helps me to keep producing quality content to share on YouTube, Instagram, and my website.
