Birnbaum, Founder and President of The Cultural Landscape Foundation, previews the event’s focus on how landscape leaders can use design to address social, cultural, and environmental concerns. He provides a brief overview of how activism has played a role in the field of landscape architecture, from Frederick Law Olmsted to Julie Bargmann, the inaugural recipient of the Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize. It is Birnbaum’s hope that comments and conversations in the forum’s two panels will inspire more people to “plant their flag in the ground.” This is the second public engagement event associated with the Oberlander Prize; the first, “Courageous by Design”, focused on the landscape architects – all women – who are leaders in addressing the climate crisis in New York City. The Landscape Activism event took place on October 28, 2022, at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, TX.
