A striker fired pistol differs from a hammer fired pistol in that it does not rely on a hammer hitting a firing pin to ignite the primer of the cartridge. Instead, a striker fired pistol has a so-called striker. Striker fired handguns feature a pre-set trigger. With this type of action, the striker is partially cocked when the slide is cycled. When the trigger is pulled, the striker gets cocked the rest of the way and released. If the striker would accidentally hit the primer from the half cock position, it would not ignite the primer.
