On Thursday the 9th of February, POLITY Magazine caught up with Professor David Runciman at the UCC 98.3FM Radio Station for a brief interview.
Professor Runciman was on campus ahead of delivering the Department of Government and Politics’ annual Philip Monahan memorial lecture in the Aula Maxima. Entitled The “Leviacene”: Living in the Age of States, Corporations and AI, the lecture provided a fascinating overview of the implications of technological developments in AI for contemporary politics, business, and society.
POLITY spoke to Professor Runciman about his advocacy for extending the franchise to six-year-olds, his assessment of democracy in the Western world today as well as the threats it faces, whether he considers the UK to be a ‘legitimate’ democracy, and finally, his thoughts on ChatGPT.
