Thiruvalluvar, one of the greatest authors in Indian history, wrote Thirukkural more than 2000 years ago. The Thirukkural is one of the most revered ancient works in the Tamil language. It is considered a 'common creed', providing a guide for human morals and betterment in life.
The 1330 couplets are written without a single poem (Kural) exceeding or falling shy of 7 words. It is the only book in the world that has the highest number of translations after the King James Bible. It begins in the name of God but still speaks of no particular religion or God.
The Kural is variously dated between 300 BCE and 5th century CE. According to Blackburn, the "current scholarly consensus" dates the text and the author to approximately 500 CE.
Tirukkural, (Tamil: “Sacred Couplets”) also spelled Tirukural or Thirukkural, also called Kural, the most celebrated of the Patiren-kirkkanakku (“Eighteen Ethical Works”) in Tamil literature and a work that has had an immense influence on Tamil culture and life.
the original copy of thirukkural is located at Tamilnadu Chennai: It is one of the 2 oldest works currently extant in Tamil literature in their entireness, the opposite being the Tolkappiyam.
Vedagiri Mudaliar is credited with printing the Thirukkal with commentaries in 1850. Its revised version was printed in 1853.
Thirukkural aims at guiding human beings to lead a moral, ethical and useful life in this world. Its focus, unlike religious works, is “life on earth” and “life-affirmation”. According to him , “One who lives an ideal life in this world will be ranked amongst the Gods in heaven”

What is the use of thirukural? The Tirukkural shortly known as the Kural, is a classic Tamil sangam treatise on the art of living.it deals with the everyday virtues of an individual. Human life should not be something that is limited, confined to a small circle. It should expand and be one with significance. To expand the minds of humanity and to create a society based on morality has been the goal of Thirukkural. In the 19th century, 1850 to be precise, Tamil scholars turned their attention to Kalathur as Vedagiri Mudaliar first printed the Tirukkural with commentaries. The revised version was released in 1853. Though Mahalinga Iyer had printed the book a few years earlier, he was able to publish only 24 chapters. The Kural is traditionally praised with epithets and alternative titles, including "the Tamil Veda" and "the Divine Book." Written on the foundations of ahimsa, it emphasizes non-violence and moral vegetarianism as virtues for an individual. “Thiruvalluvar calls morality to be the benefit of a good family life. Through the Kural 45, he states that kindness is the attribute of family life and morality is the fruit of family life. He also stresses that morality can be demonstrated by family life”.
