To divide 3/4 by 2 we can either multiply the first fraction by its reciprocal [note 1/2 is the reciprocal of 2] OR we could find a common denominator for both fractions. In this video we'll use the reciprocal method. Both methods produce the same answer in fraction form.
First we change 3/4 ÷ 2
to
3/4 times 1/2 (3/4 x 1/2)
This gives us 3/8.
So 3/4 ÷ 2 = 3/8.
Multiplying a fraction by its reciprocal is often easier for more complicated fractions where finding a common denominator is more challenging.
