"I wrote Sight Unseen -- a theatre piece for one performer -- in winter 1999/2000 with my actress friend Jennifer Taggart in mind, but Jennifer alas couldn't do it, so I gave it to my New York-based actress friend Sophia Holman -- sophiaholman.com -- whom I met at my painter friend Alex Katz's home in New York. She world premiered it under my direction on Friday 9 Sept 2011 at bowerypoetryclub.org in New York.
Sophia gave a beautifully contained performance which held the audience through its short but very intense duration.
I met Berlin-based actor Hermann Eppert online, and after myriad e-mails to and fro -- re-conceived Sight Unseen -- film version for Hermann -- for him. We rehearsed it at his Berlin apartment and at Studio Cherie where we filmed it.
He was completely adaptable to the demands of this very internal piece and his performance was all I could ask for.
I was looking for elegance, sophistication, and depth.
Sophia and Hermann gave widely divergent interpretations which testifies I think to the strength of my piece.
