Derek Till was born in the south of England; he worked in civil service in the early days of World War II, including the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. Till joined the Royal Air Force in 1941; after training in Canada, Till returned to England to fly Lancasters (similar in size to a B-17) on bombing missions over Germany. He would also serve in India and Burma, and would earn the Distinguished Flying Cross.
