Welcome to day one of the virtual Utah Legislature. We’re not sure exactly what complications may arise as the state navigates the pandemic, but we will be monitoring and engaging all of the bills that impact LGBTQ Utahns.
There are two immediate concerns. So far, thirteen states have introduced a pair of bills to restrict the liberties and freedoms of transgender Americans. Those bills are arriving in Utah as well. They are orchestrated by the anti-LGBTQ organization Alliance Defending Freedom. The irony of the name is not lost on any of us. They were the group that pushed the bills to prohibit transgender Americans from using public bathrooms (remember the enormous debacle in North Carolina? Well, that was them).
I want every transgender Utahn to know that you belong here! This is your home. Your representative is here for you. And even though these bills keep popping up, our state has a great track record of advancing transgender liberty. In 2015, transgender Utahns were included in our state’s nondiscrimination housing and employment laws. In 2019, they were included in our state’s hate crimes statute. We are making progress.
