The ductus venosus is a short vessel in utero, that connects the umbilical vein of the cord with the inferior vena cava of the baby's circulation. Although not a frequently performed investigation, the Ductus venosus Doppler test is useful in leading us to perform advanced tests to look for Down syndrome and other trisomies, when performed during the 11-14 scan testing. The ductus venosus Doppler has a typical appearence and when a so-called reverse flow is detected than we suspect a Trisomy 21 or other chromosomal abnormalities in the baby.
