A Pakistani court ordered that former prime minister Imran Khan be released on bail for two weeks Friday after his arrest sparked deadly protests and a tussle with the military. Khan’s lawyer, Faisal Chaudry, said the court also said he should not be arrested during this period.
Khan waved to supporters as he exited the Islamabad High Court following the decision. His arrest, which the Supreme Court ruled “invalid and unlawful” a day earlier, has fuelled instability in Pakistan amid an economic crisis. Meanwhile, supporters erupted into song and dance as the court ordered Khan’s release.
“Under the present circumstances, this is a sensible decision. It will bring stability to our country. We hope our courts will continue to make wise decisions like this and lead the country towards betterment,” said one supporter, Sadam Hussain.
Nearly 2,000 people have been arrested for violence since Tuesday, when Khan was detained by the anti-graft agency in a land fraud case.
