“We have repeatedly called for initiatives at the international level from the United Nations and the European Union. We keep asking the European states to exercise universal jurisdiction and to prosecute. Because we are facing 44 years of impunity, and exactly that impunity has marked the last 12 months in Iran. It is impossible for them to do justice there. They don't even know what that word is”.

“This whole generation gap between the rulers and real life, the real society, cannot continue for long. So much so that women these days no longer wear the veil, knowing they can have the same treatment as Mahsa Amini because they have realized that together, they can win. Authority cannot arrest millions of women, and this movement with the centrality of women will sooner or later lead Iran to be a free and democratic country. ”

STORYLINE:
One thousand demonstrators gathered in central Rome on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman who died in police custody in Iran last year, sparking worldwide protests against the country's conservative Islamic theocracy.
Amini, a Kurdish-Iranian woman from the western region, died three days after she was arrested by morality police, allegedly for violating laws that require women to cover their hair in public.
While authorities said that she suffered a heart attack, Amini’s supporters said she was beaten by police and died as a result of her injuries.
Her death triggered protests that spread across the country and rapidly escalated into calls to overthrow Iran’s four-decade-old Islamic theocracy.
The government is trying hard both to ignore that anniversary and tamp down any new unrest.
In Rome, the march started from Esquilino Square and ended in Fori Imperiali Street, with the Colosseum in the background.
Protesters held banners reading “Woman, Life and Freedom” and shouting “Killers” and “End to the regime”.
