Dungeons & Dragons has become a lifeline for many prisoners facing the death penalty. In many states, people on death row spend years living in isolation so extreme the U.N. condemns it as torture. To cope, they spend a lot of their time in search of escape. Some turn to D&D, where they can feel a small sense of the freedom they have left behind and build worlds behind bars.
