In September 2012, a voluntary recall was issued for three lots of a preservative-free steroid called methylprednisolone acetate that had been contaminated by a fungus and had been linked to an outbreak of fungal meningitis, a rare and potentially fatal condition.
The steroid injections were given to patients to treat pain and inflammation.
A total of 17, 676 vials were included in the three lots recalled by the New England Compounding Center, and the Centers for Disease Control estimates that approximately 13,000 patients received those vials at 76 facilities in 23 states, including 3 facilities in North Carolina.
The number of confirmed cases of patients with fungal meningitis quickly rose to more than 100 within the first couple of weeks, with the case count rising each day. Twelve people had died within the first two weeks.
Fungal meningitis occurs when the protective membranes of the brain and the spinal cord become inflamed.
Symptoms of fungal meningitis may include: fever, chills, new or worsening headache, stiff neck, confusion, dizziness, sensitivity to bright lights, new weakness or numbness anywhere in the body, slurred speech, and pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
The FDA is asking patients who have experienced symptoms following an injection with an NECC product to report it to MedWatch at 1-800-FDA-1088.
If you received a contaminated steroid injection and suffered any serious side effects as a result, you may be entitled to compensation. Call the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin right now at 1-866-844-4262 for a free evaluation of your case.
