Unbearable Heatwave in Karachi: Shocking Death Toll Revealed
In southern Pakistan, a severe heatwave has led to a significant rise in deaths, particularly in Karachi. The Edhi ambulance service reported a sharp increase in bodies collected, with 568 over six days, peaking at 141 on Tuesday. Temperatures soared above 40°C (104°F), feeling like 49°C due to high humidity. Civil Hospital Karachi treated 267 heatstroke patients, resulting in 12 deaths. The heat primarily affected older adults and outdoor workers, causing symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and high fever. Despite advice to stay hydrated and wear light clothing, many succumbed to the heat, exacerbated by frequent power cuts that disabled fans and air conditioning.
One such victim, Wasim Ahmed, a 56-year-old security guard, died of a suspected heart attack after a 12-hour shift. Similarly, Muhammad Amin, in his 40s, died amid persistent power outages. Emergency services found nearly 30 bodies on Karachi's streets, many suspected to be drug addicts. The heatwave, described as "partial," has prompted the establishment of relief centers and camps.
Neighboring India is also experiencing extreme heat, with Delhi seeing unprecedented temperatures. Experts attribute these extreme weather events to climate change, emphasizing the need for effective measures. Karachi's heatwave is expected to continue, with slightly lower temperatures forecast, and an early, heavy monsoon season predicted.
