On 1st May 1963 Spurs entertained OFK Belgrade at White Hart Lane in the 2nd leg of the 1962/63 European Cup Winners Cup Semi Final.
Spurs brought back a 2-1 lead from Belgrade and were hot favourites to advance to the final. However, they would have to do it without Jimmy Greaves, who was suspended having been sent off in the first leg.
It was a tough opening period to the game on a heavy pitch, but on 23 minutes, Dave MacKay burst through to score the night’s opener and increase Spurs lead to 3-1. Belgrade didn’t give up and within 5 minutes had equalised on the night to bring the aggregate score back to 3-2. OFK then put Spurs under considerable pressure in what was proving a tense affair – Spurs knew if OFK scored again they’d bring the tie level and cancel out the two away goals. However, the tension was eased just before the interval, when Cliff Jones fired a shot inside the far post to make it 2-1 on the night and 4-2 on agg. The final was looking much closer now.
Just 4 minutes into the second half, a fine Bobby Smith diving header made it 3-1 on night, 5-2 on agg and the tie was as good as over. The remainder of the match was played out with no further scoring and Spurs were advancing to the final and a match against holders Atletico Madrid
