This is the first video in my educational series called "How I Play Guitar." Here you have Stanley Myers' Cavatina arranged for solo classical guitar and I play it at a slowed-down tempo and include the tab and sheet music so that you can more easily see how I play the piece.
Cavatina was originally composed in 1970 and gained worldwide notoriety in 1978 when it became the theme song for the movie The Deer Hunter. It has since become a staple of the classical guitar repertoire and I believe is an appropriate piece for intermediate to advanced players. This piece presents a real challenge for the left hand and requires solid technique in terms of barres, stretches, and quick transitions so as to maintain a natural flow in both the melody and accompaniment. This piece is definitely harder to play than it at first sounds. And learning it requires patience and taking frequent breaks in order to rest the left hand and avoid fatigue. I strongly suggest focusing on keeping your left hand as relaxed as possible and learning to apply the minimum amount of pressure needed throughout. Best of luck with this beautiful tune and, above all, enjoy!
