Co-originator of permaculture, David Holmgren on the importance of developing locally adapted and universally accessible ways to communicate concepts of ecological sustainability.
Music (and the arts in general) has traditionally played an important functional role in passing these kinds of ideas from one generation to the next and it is important that, in addition to putting permaculture into practice through on-the-ground action, we in the present day also continue to cultivate, celebrate and proliferate a 'culture' of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share in our own communities and society as a whole.
Charlie Mgee of Formidable Vegetable Sound System (www.formidablevegetable.com.au) has adapted the 12 permaculture design principles into the form of an upbeat ukulele-swing album entitled 'Permaculture: A Rhymer's Manual', condensing the (occasionally complex and abstract) concepts into easy-to-remember songs based on common experience and contextually relevant examples.
