Internet giant Baidu and self-driving tech startup Pony.ai have just received approval to launch the country’s first commercial driverless taxi service, in part of Beijing.

The service will operate in a 60-square-kilometer zone in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area, with over 600 pick-up and drop-off points.

The cars will drive themselves, but will be staffed with a human driver just in case. Baidu began to launch trial services last year, but says this will be the first commercial rollout of its Apollo Go robotaxi business.

The internet company says the system has completed more than 10 million miles of testing and that it aims for its robotaxis to be available in 100 Chinese cities by 2030.
