Chasing the Pump- Positive Effects on Muscle & What to do Next!
Study - American Journal of Physiology:
6 normal untrained men were studied during intravenous infusion of a balanced amino acid mixture (approximately 0.15 g.kg-1.h-1 for 3 h) at rest and after a leg resistance exercise routine to test the influence of exercise on the regulation of muscle protein kinetics by hyperaminoacidemia
The intravenous amino acid infusion resulted in comparable increases in arterial amino acid concentrations at rest and after exercise, whereas leg blood flow was 64% greater after exercise than at rest
During hyperaminoacidemia, the increases in amino acid transport above basal were 30-100% greater after exercise than at rest
Increases in muscle protein synthesis were also greater after exercise than at rest (291 +/- 42% vs. 141 +/- 45%)
Concluded that the stimulatory effect of exogenous amino acids on muscle protein synthesis is enhanced by prior exercise, perhaps in part because of enhanced blood flow
Results imply that protein intake immediately after exercise may be more anabolic than when ingested at some later time.
------------
Researchers concluded that net protein synthesis during amino acid administration can be doubled by previous performance of heavy resistance exercise
Moreover, the data suggest a link between the stimulation of protein synthesis after exercise and an acceleration in amino acid transport
The greater rate of transport after exercise may be due to the increase in blood flow
What the researchers concluded is that physical activity (such as weight lifting) improves delivery of amino acids to your muscles, enhancing repair and growth
So it stands to reason that further increasing blood flow, as a result of getting a pump, you can increase that amino acid delivery even more, leading to bigger and better gains that you would had you not gotten a pump

**Nitric oxide Mechanism**
Nitric oxide modulates respiration due to it being a reversible inhibitor of cytochrome c oxidase (the last enzyme in the respiratory electron transport chain of cells located in the membrane)
Cytochrome blocks the respiratory chain, but nitric oxide inhibits/reverses cytochrome c oxidase
If respiratory chain is blocked, then nutrients aren’t getting through, but since NO inhibits cytochrome c oxidase, oxygen and other nutrients are able to get through
