The Israeli ambassador to the UN has called on Antonio Guterres to resign after the UN chief said the Hamas attacks on October 7 did not happen “in a vacuum”.
Gilad Erdan claimed UN secretary-general “is not fit to lead the UN” and called on him to quit “immediately”.
In the escalating diplomatic fallout, Israel’s foreign minister Eli Cohen cancelled a meeting with Guterres and also called on him to resign.
“Mr secretary-general, in what world do you live?” he said.
Guterres had also claimed that the brutal attacks by Hamas could not justify Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, which Palestinians claim has cost almost 6,000 lives, and what the UN chief called the “collective punishment of the Palestinian people”.
