The transition to clean energy will require a much greater quantity of minerals and metals than are now produced globally. Latin America in particular stands out as a region with vast potential to not only meet this rising demand, but leverage mining for sustainable economic development. Yet while the minerals potential of Latin America is significant, the mining sector across the region faces an array of environmental, social, and increasingly geopolitical, challenges. CSIS Americas Program Director Ryan C. Berg and Senior Fellow and Deputy Director Christopher Hernandez-Roy delve into the nature of the opportunities, and challenges, and sketch a path for a closer partnership between the United States and the region to bolster mineral security.
