Ontario's chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer Dr. Barbara Yaffe held a briefing on Monday to discuss COVID-19 and ongoing efforts to combat the coronavirus.
Despite Premier Doug Ford urging those who were part of the crowd at Trinity Bellwoods Park this past Saturday to get tested, Yaffe said they should self-monitor and isolate for 14 days, stay away from those at a higher risk from COVID-19 and should they still be concerned after 14 days, get tested. She added they're not recommending they "all go for testing at this point."
Williams called the large crowds at the park "disappointing" and stressed that it can have potential negative consequences, including difficulty with contact tracing as people may not know the other five or six people who were near them should health officials need to contact them should someone get COVID-19.
The province's top doctor also stressed that people need to continue to abide to COVID-19 measures even on weekends, even if numbers may make people feel they can be "casual" about distancing measures. He also said that any possible cases from Victoria Day may be seen seven to nine days from the specific weekend, adding that they'll have to wait and see what possible numbers may come from crowds at Trinity Bellwoods Park this past Saturday.
Ontario reported 404 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the total to 25,904. The death toll also increased to 2,102 after 29 new deaths were reported.
