Republican Representative Matt Lawler blasted Matt Gaetz during an appearance on CNN this week, with Lawler saying that Gaetz is "stuck on stupid" as he pushes the country towards a government shutdown. Republicans in the House don't appear to have a solid path forward to avert a shutdown, and they don't seem to actually care about that fact, either. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what's happening.

Republican representative Mike Lawler is a bit of an outlier in the Republican party today. He's a Republican representative from the state of New York, and he went on c n n this week to of course, attack his own party, specifically Matt Gates, for being, as Lawler says, stuck on stupid. Here's how that exchange went down. C n n host Kaitlyn Collins asked Lawler, do you believe that the votes are there, or is it clear to you that, uh, what the strategy is exactly tonight? Uh, and he says, well, we're gonna work like heck to pass it. I've been very clear from the start that I will not support a government shutdown, that we need to do everything we can to avoid one. Nobody wins in a government shutdown, and in fact, the American people are gonna be the ones that get hurt. No arguments there. He's right. Two weeks ago, the speaker came forth with a proposal that would reduce spending by eight, 8% in the 30 day continuing resolution, as well as enact most of the provisions of HR two to deal with our border crisis. Unfortunately, folks like Matt Gaetz chose to oppose that for some ridiculous reason.
Collins then asked, McCarthy can't lose more than four votes. There's already four hardliners saying they will not pass that no matter how much money is in it or whatever. So what is the plan on Friday night when that fails? Lawler said this, look, if that fails, obviously the only way forward is with a bipartisan continuing resolution. Any final continuing resolution would of course be bipartisan because the Democrats control the Senate. The president's a Democrat, he's gonna need to sign off on it. But obviously, when you're trying to pass something through the house, you wanna work as a conference. The American people elected a House Republican majority to serve as a check and balance and to be able to govern. And some of my colleagues have frankly been stuck on stupid and refuse to do what we were elected to do against the vast majority of the conference who have been working to avoid a shutdown.
I don't disagree with you that you're stuck on stupid. Your party is stuck on stupid. But let's be real. I already talked in a segment earlier today about the kind of budget cuts that your party's planning on doing that's not just stupid, it's cruel, and you seem to be okay with that. So I don't want anybody watching this to think this is me praising Mike Lawler for calling out Matt Gaetz for being stuck on stupid. No, anybody can call out Matt Gaetz for being stuck on stupid. What matters is what Lawler and his Republican party want to do, because in order to avert a shutdown, they're actually trying to slash and burn every single program that helps needy people across the United States. And that's also not okay. A government shutdown is not okay, but stripping needy people of the federal assistance that they depend upon that there, that's, that's not, that's non-negotiable. We, we cannot do that. Absolutely not.
But to Lawler's point about the people being stuck on stupid, they are stupid. These are very stupid people. These are very whiny, petulant children that we have in the Republican caucus. They have demands. They're not always clear on what those demands are. They change from day to day, right? Like, Hey, we put your border stuff in there. Well, now I want you to defund the, the prosecutions into Trump. Okay, well, you know, we can't really do that. It's probably gonna come back to hurt us.
