Every 216 years, an Eclipse takes place in which the pre-destined owner of the Crimson Behelit is called to the Interstice, a plane between the physical and astral realms, along with their loved ones who the Chosen will sacrifice to become a member of the God Hand, powerful beings answering to an evil god.
As time went on, the kingdoms of Midland and Chuder began their Hundred Year War. Gambino, a mercenary in the war, came upon a hanged woman who had given birth to a young boy. Though his men feared the foul omen, Shisu, Gambino's lover, took the boy as her own, but her recent miscarriage slowly drove her mad.
When Shisu died, Gambino trained Guts to fight, but also abused him and sold him for a night to his perverted comrade. A drunken Gambino, blaming Guts for the death of his lover, later attacked the boy, who killed his adoptive father in self-defense.
In the following years, Guts fought as a lone mercenary carrying a large sword and a death wish. Only happy in battle, he quickly caught the attention of famous mercenary group, the Band of the Hawk. Their leader, Griffith, would prove to be the skilled leader Guts needed. But Griffith's desire for a kingdom, and that creepy Crimson Behelit around his neck could make things get real weird, real fast.
