Our nervous system is made up of two very distinct parts: the sympathetic nervous system, or "fight or flight" which is active when we're facing a serious threat to our existence; and the parasympathetic nervous system, which regulates the rest and recuperation period after the stressor has been removed.
Too much activity in either system can lead to health issues like high blood pressure, slower digestion, faster aging, a decrease in memory function, an increase in fat storage, anxiety and depression- all of which are hallmarks of modern life.
So how do we train our body to be in that middle spot where it's fit enough to defend us when we need it, but calm enough to enjoy life when we don't? What relaxes our nervous system so that it can stay there?
