Here's a weather word you've probably never heard. Freshet. Let that one sink in.

I'm Storm Shield Meteorologist Jason Meyers, and a freshet is the annual spring rise of streams in cold climates as a result of snow melt. It can also refer to a flood caused by rain or melting snow.

This term is usually limited to smaller streams and rivers in northern North America - think Canada.

The Spring thaw causes snow and ice to melt away into the small streams and rivers, and this sudden addition of extra water causes these waterways to overflow and flood. The flood waters eventually flow into larger rivers, potentially causing floods downstream as well.
