Serbian is spoken by as many as 10 million people, principally in the Balkan nation of Serbia, where it is the only official language, as well as in neighboring Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and parts of other nearby countries in Eastern and Central Europe. One of two standardized varieties of Serbo-Croatian, it is a sister tongue Croatian, and closely related to other Slavic languages, especially Slovene, Macedonian and Bulgarian.
