Yesterday, at about 21:44 local time, an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred in the Iranian province of Western Azerbaijan.
The epicenter was near Khoy city at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi).
The tremors were so strong that they were felt in many areas of the West Azerbaijan province, causing concern among the residents.
Since then, more than 40 aftershocks have been recorded, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 4.2.
Iranian emergency officials said rescue teams were sent to the affected areas.
Hospitals were put on alert.
Reported serious damage to houses and buildings both in the city itself and in the surrounding villages.
The Mehr news agency reported that about 70 villages were affected.
At least three people died and hundreds were injured in the quake, according to Iranian news agencies.
According to the governor of West Azerbaijan Province, at least 816 people were injured, some of them were taken to nearby areas for treatment.
Relief and damage assessment work continues.
Meanwhile, Turkey's Disaster Management Authority said no damage or casualties were reported in Van Province, which borders Iran.
Khoy is a city in northwestern Iran, in the province of Western Azerbaijan, north of Lake Urmia.
The population is about 185 thousand people.
