The Silverpoint Exhibition
December 2 - 21
The Opening Reception will now be held on
Wednesday, December 4, 6:00 to 8:00 PM
The first silverpoint exhibition in this country, The Fine Line: Drawing with Silver in
America, was organized by Bruce Weber at the Norton Gallery and School of Art, in
1985. In its catalog, he wrote, "In the hands of draftsmen of skill and vision
silverpoint is a medium of possibility, awaiting still further investigation." It took
twenty-one more years before an exhibition of metalpoint took place at The Telfair
Museum of Art, Savannah, GA, in 2006 and three more before the one in the
Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science, in 2009. In 2015, The National
Gallery, Washington, D.C. in conjunction with The British Museum, England is
planning a landmark metalpoint exhibit. It will focus largely on historic works and
contain a limited number of images from the 1900s to the present.
"The Silverpoint Exhibition" at the NAC is a pivotal investigation of the art of
silverpoint by contemporary artists. The artists in this exhibition have been lured by
the magic of the medium, enticed into delving into the search for the perfect
formula for the perfect surface and tempted into exploring the haunting qualities of
silverpoint with their unique vision. They are free from the limitations of materials
that bound the old masters.
