TODAY’S LGBTIQ FESTIVE SPECIAL FROM PINKSIXTY.COM FEATURES THE WORK OF THE ALI FORNEY CENTER
The Ali Forney Center in New York City offers practical support to LGBTi young homeless people. It was named after a young gay, transgender activist who was murdered on the streets of Harlem in 1997.
LGBTi youth make up 40% all homeless people in The Big Apple, with many using sex as a survival skill. The Ali Forney Center offers a safe, non-judgemental space for young people to find shelter, food and friendship.
In 2015, the AFC opened its first transgender housing programme in Brooklyn, with 18 beds available for 16-20-year-olds. Clients can stay up to 18 months, accessing benefits, medical care, education and skills training.
In 2016 Lady Gaga visited the centre, donating clothes, makeup, shoes and bags. She spent time talking with the kids and opened up about her rape and how she copes with the emotional trauma.
And in 2017, partly as a result of a $300,000 inheritance from Golden Girl actress Bea Arthur, a new building opened just in time for Christmas. The Bea Arther Residence offers long-term accommodation for up to 18 young people.
