The kids and their friends are singing an extremely popular Bengali chora song everyone knows as “Aye brishti jhepe dhan debo mepe.” The song is a humorous depiction of a prank that is often played on a Bengali groom by his in-laws. As is customary during the nuptial proceedings, members of the bride’s family offer grain to the groom as a token of appreciation. However, this ritual often transforms into a hilarious exercise as the bride’s family members use this opportunity to pull harmless pranks on the unsuspecting groom. One such prank is to give a bowlful of grain infested with insects to the unwitting groom.
In this video, the kids together with their fantasy friends act out this ritual and enjoy themselves. Their song is also an ode to the most common Bengali norms followed during the rainy season. For instance, during rainfall, most Bengali households cook a delicious preparation made from rice and pulses known as Khichdi. This tasty vegetarian dish is usually accompanied by a spicy potato preparation known as aloor dum as a side dish.
After having their time in the rain, the kids realise that it is time for them to dry themselves and get warm. With that in mind, they bid goodbye to the rain and beckon the sun to shine again. After listening to their yearnings, the dark clouds that had hitherto gathered disperse to make way for the bright and yellow sun and its warm rays.
