Domenica Lorusso, MD, PhD, from the Fondazione IRCCS Instituto Nazionale Dei Tumori, Milan, Italy, discusses strategies in the treatment of locally advanced cervical cancer at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2017 in Madrid, Spain. Traditionally, locally advanced cervical cancer is treated with concurrent chemoradiation, however, an alternative strategy is to perform surgery with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Research has shown that there is little difference in terms of overall and progression free survival between the two strategies. However, for patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiation, toxicity remains an issue.
