One of the promises of the AI PC and of Meteor Lake specifically is that they can enhance some of the experiences that are now ubiquitous in our always-online lives. When it comes to hybrid and remote work, there are few programs as ubiquitous as Zoom. In this demo, we see how efficiently the Intel Core Ultra’s NPU handles sustained, low-power AI workloads, in this case background blur during a video call. Ordinarily most of the analysis and processing required to determine foreground and background pixels and apply blur effects to the background would be handled by the GPU. The NPU sustains this process while using much less power, with headroom to spare. This frees up valuable resources across the CPU and GPU for running applications, background processes, video encode and decode, and more.
