Dr. Scarlet Constant, Pediatrician with Baptist Health South Florida, says she refers to suggest stool softeners than laxatives. "Laxatives are almost never recommended. They will pull in a lot of fluid and electrolytes from the gut, and then you have a dehydrated baby."
She also explains that for adolescents, it is a lot more complicated because it is about functional constipation, where there is not a physical logical reason.
