Is this the most beautiful wildflower meadow in Britain? It's got to be up there! This wildflower meadow in Somerset is an absolutely stunning example of a unimproved wildflower grassland. Unimproved wildflower meadows have declined by 97% since the the 1930's and only 3% now remain. The remaining fragments are isolated and well scattered across the country. Somerset has just 22 ha of this habitat and it is full of insects and butterflies.
This particular site is a National Nature Reserve and A Site of Special Scientific Interest. The meadows belong to a type characterised by the widespread occurrence of Sweet Vernal Grass, Crested Dog’s Tail, Cowslip and Green Winged Orchid. A total of 74 different species have so far been recorded on the site.
