My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about seizures in dogs. Seizures can happen in dogs for a number of different reasons. Seizures that happen in young dogs are usually development. Seizures in middle age dogs is usually idiopathic epilepsy, and seizures in older dogs can be brain lesions or tumors. Of course, other things like infection, inflammation, and trauma can all cause seizures too.
The goal of this video is to give some direction for if your dog is having or starting to have seizures.
I really like it if a pet parent is able to record the possible seizure. This will also for us to better understand the neuralgic event to make sure it is a seizure.
Also consulting with your veterinarian is very important. Your veterinarian will complete lab work to better understand what is causing the seizure. Of course advance imaging can be completed like an MRI, but this is not common in the veterinary world. Lab work is always completed.
Monitoring at home and possibly starting seizure medications based on your veterinarian's recommendation is very important. Also calling or visiting your local veterinarian regarding new or changing symptoms is really important. If your doggy ever has a long seizure or multiple seizures in a row this is an emergency and should be seen right away.
It is scary when your dog has a seizure, but having your dog checked out to make sure they are okay, is very important and will give you peace of mind.
