Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) on Monday completed a series of successful live-fire tests of the
Barak air defense system. The tests were carried out to evaluate the system’s capability to deal with
a range of scenarios and threats, including the interception of a ballistic target by the Barak ER
INTERCEPTOR OR BARAK extended range interceptor.
Hello and welcome back to your own channel Indian defense analysis where we bring to you all the
latest developments in defense sector.
The Barak ER missiles are, part of the Barak family of interceptors developed by Israel Aerospace
Industries IAI, is capable of intercepting ballistic and non-ballistic threats at a range of 150
kilometers. The extended range is made possible in part by adjusting the interceptor and the missile
system's MMR radar to a 150 km range.
The vertically-launched missile includes a booster, a dual-pulse rocket motor, and an advanced
radar homing seeker.
India is also using Barak 8 missile system which is in service since 2016 and has a range of 100 km.
The newly developed Barak ER missile has been offered to India, but it is not clear that India will buy
Barak ER or DRDO will develop its own extended range variant of indigenously developed missiles.
As if today USA so far has clear stand on purchase of s-400 air defense system. And it is clear that if
India will procure the s-400 system from Russia, CATSA- a soft or hard sanction can be imposed on
India considering the US-India ties. To avoid this situation Barak ER could be game changer for the
air defense system of India. Considering the fact that current Barak 8 missiles can counter any aerial
threats like drones, ballistic missiles, cruise missile, fighter jets, etc. Barak ER will be more deadly
than its previous versions with lots of modification in propulsion system and IR seekers. Currently
Barak ER is in series of testing and trails and it will take it some time to come in full production.
Boaz Levy, Israel Aerospace Industries IAI president and CEO, said that The evolution of airborne
threats across the globe, combined with geopolitical changes, requires an advanced, agile, and
versatile air defense system. The Barak system was operationally proven against countless threats,
including some of the most challenging ones today. The trial series we completed today enhances
the proven capabilities against wider range of threats. The successful trial further demonstrates the
robustness of the Barak system's based on IAI's innovation, technological capabilities and decades
of experience in developing air defense systems. The combination of several interceptors in a unified
launcher and the inherent modularity of the Barak system provide an optimal response for the future
battlefield, offering the forces unprecedented operational agility and flexibility.
